BiographyHistory

Rudesindo Salvado was born in Tuy, Spain. His work was published in Italian and translated into English, Spanish and French. He began his monastic career at the age of fifteen in 1838, joining the Benedictine monastery at La Cava near Naples and becoming ordained. He came to Australia first having joined a group of missionaries recruited to the New Norcia Mission, Western Australia, by the then Catholic Bishop of Perth, John Brady. He was recalled to Rome in 1849 where he published his memoirs, but returned to Australia in 1853 where he was eventually named Abbot of New Norcia. He died in Rome but was later entombed in New Norcia. His memoirs have been translated into Spanish and French as well as English.
