Joshua Rapoport was born in Bialystok, Poland. Already a well-known writer in Poland before World War I, he also translated some sixty books from Russian, French and German. In Australia he worked as editor of the Jewish Post and the Australian Jewish News. He was a member of the Australian Council for Cultural Freedom and of Yiddish PEN (USA). His works include some in Russian, Yevreiskie Pisateli [Jewish Writers] and Na Privalie [Respite Spot], published in Shanghai between 1942 and 1946, and also In di Vegn fun der Nayer Europeisher Literatur [In the Footsteps of the New European Literature] in three volumes and Zwishn Yo un Nein [Between Yes and No], essays, published in Warsaw before World War II.
