BiographyHistory

A prodigious English novelist and playwright, Agatha Christie has been credited with consolidating 'the form of the pure mystery novel, achieving in five or six of her books puzzle stories that set a standard unlikely ever to be decisively bettered'. Renowned for creating the iconic characters of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, Christie has 'sold more books than any other writer except Shakespeare. Totalling her sales was a task that defeated her agent and publishers. Her works have been translated into more than a hundred languages. She was, in short, the most successful mystery writer the world has known.'

  • A brief biographical note accompanied by a portrait of the author appears in The Home: An Australian Quarterly (September 1922). The caption reads: 'Mrs Agatha Christie, who has the unique distinction of being the pioneer of women detective story-writers. She has had two of these published by John Lane, and her The Mysterious Affair at Styles was accepted by The Times as a serial for its weekly edition...Mrs Christie, after a brief visit to Australia, is now en route for London with her husband, Colonel Christie, who is occupied with the organisation of the Australian section of the huge British Empire Exhibition to be held in London in the autumn of 1924.'
