Elias Mourkakos studied at a school of drama and film in Athens and participated in one theatre and four film productions before leaving Greece. In Melbourne, he studied at the drama school, E Gephyra. He was one of the founders of the theatre ensemble, LaÏke Skine [Popular Stage]. He has been a member of Universal Estia of Writers (Greece), the Modern Greek Teachers Association and the Modern Greek Action Group for maintaining Hellenism abroad. His work has been read on Radio 3EA in 1982. He has read - mainly at occasions commemorating the sacrifice of Greek lives in 1974 at the time of the Junta - for the Greek-Australian League at the State Film Theatre in 1980, for the Modern Greek Teachers Association at the Phillip Institute in 1989 and 1990 and at Ithacan House and the Northcote Library during 1990 and 1991. In 1988, he won first prize in a short story competition.
