BiographyHistory

Zoia Kohut was born in Sumy in the Ukraine. Her early education was received in places such as Novosibirsk, Samarkand and Alma Ata because of her father's imprisonment and exile in Siberia and Middle Asia. In 1943 she left the Ukraine for Germany and studied Philosophy at Freiburg University from 1946 to 1949. She has been a member of the Ukrainian Writers in Exile Association and also of The Word [Slovo]. Possessed of a knowledge of German, Russian and English, she became a broadcaster on Radio 3EA. She has given numerous readings of her poetry on that station and also in public forums in Canada, the United States, Italy, Austria, France, Belgium, Germany, Spain and England, as well as in major cities in Australia.
