BiographyHistory

Mara Kalniete began writing early, intending to become an author in Latvia. In 1944, the Soviet invasion of Latvia interrupted her education at the University and Drama School, Riga. During the 1980s she broadcast theatre reviews on the Latvian language program of Radio 3EA. She has read at literary gatherings in Melbourne in the 1950s and from 1983 to 1989 at all Latvian writers' days throughout Australia.
