Margaret Shannon was born in Adelaide, but when she was fourteen she and her family moved to New Zealand to live in Dunedin. She wrote and illustrated her first boook at the age of twelve. At the time of publishing (1991) she lived in Auckland and was studying for her BA, writing and doing some printmaking.
