Ted Prior worked as a policeman then studied at the National Art School, Sydney, New South Wales, where he gained a Diploma in Painting in 1969. From 1971 to 1974 he taught at the National Art School, Newcastle, moving to a farm in Dorrigo in 1975. Prior has since worked in film animation and children's television alongside a career as a practising artist. He works in the mediums of drawing, etching, sculpture and assemblage. Prior held many individual and group exhibitions of his paintings and prints. He has been working on his 'Grug' series of picture books since 1979. Prior taught in the Faculty of Arts and Media at the Hunter Institute of Technology until retiring in 2005. He has since lived at Killabach on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales and been artist in residence at the Manning Regional Gallery..
