Dorothy Survela had an interrupted education due to illness but her health improved after she and her brother were evacuated to a rural area during World War II. She was later able to complete her education at the Tiber Street Secondary School. As a wife and mother, Dorothy moved to South Africa in late 1965 with her family. She then studied bookkeeping and accounting before the family moved to Australia. She was still living in Australia in 1988.
