Thea Hush matriculated at the North Sydney Girls' High school and graduated from the University of Sydney with an Arts degree in 1949. She was employed at different times in a variety of occupations that included working in a small art gallery, nightclub work and teaching.
In 1949 she married Noel Hush, who was later (1971) to become Foundation Professor of Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Sydney. They moved to England in 1950 and lived in Manchester, Bristol and London before returning to Australia in 1971. While they were in England her novel The Edifice was published by Hutchinson's New Authors.
On her return to Australia Hush continued writing and won a Commonwealth writers' award and two state awards. She was a book reviewer for The Australian from 1972-1978.
In 1975 she completed another novel, 'The Aristocrats'. It was accepted for publication, but apparently due to cut-backs this was suddenly cancelled. She re-wrote part of it and re-named it 'The Exile'.
Thea Hush died in 1978, with the book still unpublished. Although it is believed that she would have wished to make some final revisions to 'The Exile' before publication, the work was essentially complete.
