BiographyHistory

James Heath Lewis worked as a printer in London, patenting an improved method for embossing and relief printing, before coming to Australia on the Kangaroo in 1854 and working in the Government Printing Office in Adelaide. In 1856 he started his own stationery and printing business, J. H. Lewis and Co., in Morphett Street, Adelaide. Among other things, he printed directories, almanacs, and the Protestant Advocate, a weekly newspaper with a religious tone.

In 1879 Lewis sold the business and returned to England, intending to stay there, but finding the climate unpleasant he returned to Australia, where he remained until his death in Adelaide in 1890.
