Best known as an illustrator of children's books, Roland Harvey is a former architect who established Roland Harvey Studios, an illustration and design firm in 1978. In 1981 he expanded his business by establishing his own book publishing company Five Mile Press. His children's book division, Roland Harvey Books, aims to publish books that raise awareness of issues, concepts and ideas as well as entertain readers.
Harvey has written picture books and humorous historical works for young children, and has illustrated both his own and other authors' work. He has written activity and joke books for children, and has illustrated a line of calendars, friezes and diaries. Harvey has won several awards for his work in the area of children's literature, and has given numerous writing and illustrating workshops in schools.
When interviewed for Walter McVitty's Authors and Illustrators of Australian Children's Books (1989) Harvey said he liked to deliberately include errors or anachronisms in his illustrations to see the reader's sense of achievement when they uncover it. The correspondence he receives from children show how much enjoyment the attention to detail and the inclusion of a silly joke or comment gives to children.
