BiographyHistory

Elizabeth Bartha was born in Szasz Regen, Transylvania (now part of Romania but until 1919, part of Hungary) and completed high school studies. At the outbreak of WW II, she emigrated to Hungary and settled in Budapest, living there until the popular uprising of 1956. She then fled to Austria and waited until receiving her immigration papers. After coming to Australia, she became an Australian citizen and worked as a seamstress.

Bartha became a member of Australian Society of Authors and PEN International, receiving a fourth prize and commendation for her work in the Hungarian magazine Magyar Hirek autobiography competition in 1982.
