The Reverend Col Stringer became better known after the 2004 ABC TV Favourite Book poll where two of his books, 800 Horseman and Fighting Mackenzie, Anzac Chaplain were listed at No. 12 and 29 respectively.

Stringer lived in Darwin for 25 years where he owned a fishing tackle and gun shop, writing a number of books on fishing and local histories such as Frontier Territory (197-?) with Glenville Pike, and The Way It Was (198-?); natural history works on Barramundi (197-?), Wildlife of Tropical Australia (1981); and the autobiographical High Adventure with Jesus and Mulga Bill's Dinkum Aussie Guide to the Bible, reflecting his career move to Pentecostal preacher based in Queensland.
