Rick Searle started writing full time in 1976, mostly for the screen. He began his professional life as a teacher, writing radio scripts part time for the ABC. He then became a staff writer at the Queensland Education Department's Film Centre in Brisbane, writing scripts for a wide range of educational productions. Searle also worked as a university lecturer and radio presenter. His feature film credits include
Farm Behind the Beach (1986). He also wrote television programs, including
Butterfly Island, a children's television mini-series (1986);
Tigers and Snakes (1986); and
Quinkan Country (1987).
Butterfly Island was internationally successful, enabling Searle to leave the Education Department. He continues to write, produce, and direct award-winning films, videos, and multi-media for both adult and young audiences.
