BiographyHistory

Author-illustrator Zhenya Gay was well known for her illustrations of baby animals. She attended Columbia University and later studied with sculptor Solon Burglum and artist Winold Reiss.

Among her earliest artistic works were movie posters, newspaper advertisements and costume sketches for theatrical productions. After travelling in Europe and America, she left New York in 1954 to reside in the Catskill Mountains. It was here that she began drawing woodland animals from around her area. Her first illustrated children's book, written by Jan Gay was Pancho and His Burro, (1930).
