Ollis initially enlisted in the 1st Field Regiment as a gunner on 5 February 1942 but transferred to the Royal Australian Air Force on 30 June 1942. He became a Flying Officer with 101 Squadron, Bomber Command, Royal Air Force and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was discharged on 14 February 1946.
