Noted in J. L. Blyth, Darling Downs Writers: A Bibliography (1989) as born Hilda Lane, daughter of John Lane. However, other records indicate that she was the daughter of Robert Monteith, a teacher in the Queensland Education department.(J. H. Hornibrook Bibliography of Queensland Verse (1953) and the Queensland Federation Index 1890-1914 : index to births, deaths and marriages in Queensland 1890-1914).
