BiographyHistory

Very little is known about the life of Marcelina Kossak but a great deal is known of her father, Ladislaus S. Kossak. He was a Polish revolutionary fighter in Hungary who sailed for Melbourne in 1852, where he prospected for gold and for a time belonged to the police force. He and a friend became, in 1853, the first Poles to become naturalised Australians.

Not surprisingly perhaps, the strongly nationalistic poetry Marcelina wrote about her country of origin and adopted country, extended to support of Great Britain in the struggle against the 'old enemy' Germany in World War I. Some of her writing also reflected ardently religious themes.
