Williams probably went to Sydney from Hobart, where he served in the Government Harbour Service. (E. Morris Miller and Frederick T. Macartney Australian Literature: A Bibliography to 1938: Extended to 1950 (1956): 494).

  • Richard Williams may have also written an appeal in verse to Lady Gipps, the wife of Sir George Gipps the governor of New South Wales, 1838-1846. The appeal was published as an extract 'by a Mr Williams [q.v.], formerly a lieutenant in the 9th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry' in the Australasian Chronicle, 28 April 1840.
