The son of a carver and gilder, George Thomas Walters was educated at a local elementary school and a private academy. He considered a career in commerce, but followed a religious calling, eventually becoming a minister in the Unitarian Christian Church. In 1884 he was appointed to the Melbourne Unitarian Christian Church at Eastern Hill, an affluent middle-class congregation that supported the building of a new church and particpated in the cultural activities Walters organised. His journal Modern Thought was published monthly in late 1885, but he moved to Sydney soon after to take up an appointment at the Hyde Park Unitarian Church in Sydney. Here he became a member of the Dickens Fellowship and he was active in a number of cultural institutions such as the Sydney Mechanics' Institute. He wrote several plays in the 1890s and one of these, Joseph of Canaan was published in 1895. He continued his ministry until 1926 when he died at Mosman after being struck down by a car.
