Notes

  • Three Years in Melbourne, or, Letters to My Daughter at Home (1859) has been ascribed to E. W. Stephens by E. Morris Miller and Frederick T. Macartney's Australian Literature: a bibliography to 1938 : extended to 1950 (1956): 444. However there are strong indications in the text that the author was a man, not a woman, and was a visitor to Australia anticipating return to the U.K.at the time of writing. E. W. Stephens was a Methodist minister resident in South Australia by 1864.
