Neville Hawthorn Smith had a BA from Melbourne, and as a journalist worked on the Herald, Sun News-pictorial and the Star, and also contributed short stories to magazines. Smith was editor of The Second World War in Map and Story (Richmond: R.N. Myers, 1941-1945), a 5-volume work. He lived in London and Paris between 1924 and 1926. His father was Arthur Norman Smith (1862-1935), one of the founders of the Australian Journalists' Association, and was its first general president and for five years the general secretary. The family endowed the Arthur Norman Smith Lectureship in Journalism at the University of Melbourne.
