BiographyHistory

W. J. Sheppard was described in The Gadfly of 7.11.1906 as 'an Adelaide citizen, who follows commercial pursuits more closely than the inky way' (quoted in Paul Depasquale A Critical History of South Australian Literature 1836-1930 (1978).

Son of William Tyndall Sheppard, the Auditor-General, William James Sheppard served for seven years in the audit office before working for the Adelaide Steamship Company where he became manager of the share department, and cashier. He only wrote one novel, but was a frequent contributor to the Adelaide newspaper, The Register.
