Notes

  • In The Bibliography of Australian Literature K-O, Menzies’ entry is listed under James L. Menzies. The identification of the author as James L. Menzies came originally from Miller and Macartney's Australian Literature: A Bibliography to 1938: Extended to 1950. It was stated in the BAL K-O entry that the author was possibly the James L. Menzies who was born in 1890, and died at Glen Iris, Vic., in 1952. However, at the end of 'The Briton to the Boer', Menzies states that the poem 'appeared in the Melbourne Herald the evening the Boer War ultimatum was announced' (i.e. early October 1899), so the author is clearly not the James L. Menzies born in 1890.

It has now been established that the author is John Henry Loxton Menzies.
