BiographyHistory

William Kelly was an Irish Jesuit who lived in Australia from 1865 until 1888. He taught at St Patrick's College, East Melbourne until 1878 and was then transferred to the just established St Aloysius College in Sydney, where he taught until his return to Ireland in 1888. He was well versed in the classics and was also a scientist of note. He was an outstanding orator and engaged in many of the religious controversies of the day, an example of which is his A Complete Refutation of the Rev. Dr Bromby's Theory : Beyond the Grave (Melbourne, 1870). Kelly was also the author of two poetry broadsheets, Ode to the Duke of Edinburgh (1867) and Ode to Dr Goold (1873), and of the three-act play Marie Antoinette (1875).

  • Although Ferguson attributes the pseudonym Verax to Kelly, it was in fact used not by Kelly but by another Jesuit, Joseph O'Malley (1830-1910).
