Alfred Hawker came to South Australia in 1840 but was apparently continuously at sea for health reasons. As a passenger on the 1865 voyage of the popular ship the City of Adelaide to South Australia he was a member of an ad hoc literary group, the 'City of Adelaide Poetical Association', consisting of both adults and children. On reaching Adelaide he published a book of versecomposed by members of the group.
