BiographyHistory

Linda Phillips, born in Melbourne in June 1899, gave evidence of musical and creative abilities from an early age. At 14 she began composing music, writing verse and also lyrics to her own songs. She studied at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. For many years Linda Phillips played an active and important part in the musical life of Australia, was music critic for the Sun News Pictorial from 1949 to 1976 and was the annual co-adjudicator for the Melbourne Sun Aria Competition. In 1922 she published a book of verse From a City Garden. To celebrate her 100th birthday, a special concert featuring some of her compositions was presented by ABC Classic FM on 6 June 1999.
