Joseph Hadfield Grundy arrived in South Australia from England at the age of nineteen. Eight years later he founded the wholesale jeweller and druggist firm of Grundy Brothers, Importers.

He was keenly interested in municipal affairs and served on the Adelaide City Council 1889-1890 and as an alderman on the Unley Council ca. 1900-1904. He was later Mayor of Brighton 1914-1918, and lived in Beach Road, Brighton.

He travelled in Europe and in the Pacific, and as well as his book of verse he wrote several travel pamphlets on the Pacific.
