Daughter of Mark Holder and his wife Sarah Matilda (nee Cox), Mary Holder was married at the age of sixteen to Martin Gilbert at St Aidan's Church, Marden. Her husband was a hairdresser at Payneham in 1900, and they would appear to have lived at different times at Payneham and at Hamley Bridge. Mary Anne Gilbert was the licensee of the Dublin Hotel in 1922-1923. She died at the age of forty-seven.
Her book, Cooee and Other Verses, was published to raise funds for the Soldiers Home League of South Australia.
