BiographyHistory

H. E. Elton wrote essays and volumes of poetry for adults and children. Before coming to Australia he published Two Years in the Army, 1904-1906 [1914], a selection of essays titled The Melody of Life (1920) and a selection of poetry, Ultimate Values : Crudely Expressed in Verse : Written on the Fields of France and Flanders, 1914-1918 (1920). From 1919-1920 he was superintendent at an English school, before arriving in Mernda in Victoria in 1927. In addition to his works of literature, he also wrote Mohammed, The Prophet of Islam (1914) and the controversial tracts God's Priceless Montebank : An Allegory and Tale of Heresy During Melbourne's First Centenary Celebrations (1935). Some of his work, Centenary Songs in particular, resulted in him being brought before Church courts.
