Margaret Compton Saunders (known as 'June') died tragically when she was swept into the sea at Point Lookout, Stradbroke Island. She had written poems, essays and short stories from the age of ten, and many of them appeared in the Brisbane Courier and the Brisbane Daily Mail, as well as the school magazines of the Girls' Grammar, Ipswich, and the Teachers' Training College, Brisbane, both of which she attended during her short life. After qualifying as a teacher, she taught at the Ipswich Girls' State School. She was an amateur actress, performing with the Brisbane Repertory Society and the Unity Theatre Group. She also appeared on local Ipswich radio programs.
