After his tertiary education in Melbourne, Anastasios Tamis was a lecturer at the University of Melbourne, Monash University and La Trobe University before his appointment as Professor in Sociolinguistics and the History of Greek Diaspora at La Trobe University. A pioneer in sociolinguistic studies on the Greek language in Australia and New Zealand, he is also the executive director of the National Centre for Hellenic Studies and Research at La Trobe.
During the last twenty years, he has been published extensively in various European, American and Australian journals. Since 1985, he has had published fifteen monographs, edited nine books, and authored over 100 chapters and papers in Australia, Europe and America. His long list of published works includes The Greeks in Australia, Cambridge University Press, London (2005); From Migrants to Citizens: Greek Migration in Australia and Canada, La Trobe University, Melbourne (2002); The History of Greeks in Australia, volumes I and II, Vanias Press, Thessalonice (1997 and 2000); The Greek Language in Australia, University of Crete (2001); and The Immigration and Settlement of Macedonian Greeks in Australia, La Trobe University Press (1994).
Tamis is the editor of the refereed Journal Publication Series on Macedonia, published biannually in Melbourne by the Australian Institute of Macedonian Studies. He makes regular contributions to Radio 3XY and SBS, as well as to the Australian-Greek newspaper, Neos Kosmos. Tamis holds an honorary doctorate of letters from the National University of Greece and was awarded the Onassis International Prize in Athens in 2006.
