BiographyHistory

Sophie Osmond was an actor and drama critic in Melbourne, before leaving for London in 1900.

Osmond began her career as a teacher, including serving as headmistress of a school at Bullengarook, near Gisborne, and Chintin on the Deep Creek. She then turned to the stage, beginning in the chorus of the Montague-Turner Opera Company in Melbourne, then the Herbert and Ireland dramatic company and the Dan Barry company, which was then touring the provinces. She finished with the Williamson, Garner, and Musgrove opera company, which she left to take up journalism full time.

She began writing for Table Talk, but later worked as Melbourne correspondent for the Daily Telegraph (Launceston) and the Town Topics (New York), as well as being one of the founders of the Austral Salon.

Sources include 'Miss Sophie Osmond' (Table Talk, 1 December 1894, p.5).
