BiographyHistory

Joseph Jacobs was a Hebrew scholar who wrote many books and articles on Jewish life and hisotry. He also compiled, edited and adapted folktales, fables and fairytales from different cultures (eg. Celtic, English, Indian, and Aesop's fables); some of his adaptations were republished long after his death. Jacobs was educated in Sydney, but emigrated to the USA in 1900 to become the editor of the Jewish Encyclopaedia. He worked at the Jewish Seminary of New York until 1913, and was the editor of The American Hebrew from 1913 until his death in 1916.
