Daina Skele obtained a degree in Baltic Philology from the University of Riga in Latvia. She began writing from an early age, contributing to children's magazines. Owing to family commitments Skele did not write during World War II and for a long time after, resuming writing only in 1974. She has read her work on various occasions including at the Latvian Writers Week held in Sydney in 1989.
Daina Skele has written two unpublished works: a selection of short stories, Nav Nevienas Cela Zimes (There is No Sign to Show the Way), and a selection of autobiographical prose and diary entries, Certurtas Meitas Piezimes (Diary of the Fourth Sister). Her work has also been published in periodicals, including Latvian Australian News, Jauna Gaita, Daugavas Vanagi, Treji Varti and Zurnals.
