Anne Chittleborough was born in Adelaide and educated at Presbyterian Girls' College and the University of Adelaide (BA 1966). She married the Rev'd Martin Chittleborough in 1964, and lived in Papua New Guinea 1966-1976, working as a teacher and correspondence teacher with the Anglican Mission.
Returning to Australia in 1976 with their two children, they lived first in Waikerie for two years then Sydney from 1978-1982. During this time Anne completed a Graduate Diploma in Library Science at Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education (1981).
They have lived in Adelaide since 1983, and Anne has worked as a librarian at Flinders University 1985-1989 and as a Research Assistant at Flinders University 1991-2003. From 1995-2000 she was involved in developing a database of South Australia's women writers, which forms the basis of a subset of AustLit (see http://www.austlit.edu.au/specialistDatasets/SAWW). She was also responsible for updating and expanding Lyn Jacobs' and Rick Hosking's Bibliography of Australian Literary Responses to 'Asia', which has formed the basis of the Australian Literary Responses to 'Asia'.
Chittleborough worked as a compiler of AustLit for many years from its inception and retired from that position at the end of 2007.
