Before becoming a full time writer, editor and publisher in 1979, Martin worked as a primary school teacher, administrator and curriculum writer in South Australia for fourteen years. He wrote for various educational publishers, and in 1971 founded Era Publications. He has been on the Board of the Australian Copyright management company, CAL. Martin has also produced children's music cassettes.
