  • Formed in 1945 with Mary Gilmore as Patroness.
  • In 1946, a subcommittee of the Society in New South Wales organised the judging of Book of the Year. In 1947 the Society's Book of the Year Award was not conferred but eight 'books of merit' were listed. These were all children's books divided into four age-defined categories (see Pownall's report).
  • The Society announced a competition for children's writers in association with John Sands Pty Ltd that was 'separate from the Children's Book of the Year Competition' with entries to close on 31 March, 1948 (see 'Story Competition').
