Peter McFarlane graduated from the University of Adelaide with a B.A. Dip. Ed. He worked as a teacher in high schools in the South Australian education system, and since 1994 has been a full-time writer. He has also been editor of the South Australian English Teachers' Association Journal, Opinion, and Publications Officer for the Australian Association for the Teaching of English. He has been involved with Friendly Street Poets from its inaugural meeting in 1975.
His books include a range of poetry texts for schools, which he co-edited : Orange Moon (1975; with Garth Boomer); A Book to Write Poems By (1983), A Book to Perform Poems By (1985), Making the Magic (1988), and Doing Bombers Off the Jetty (1997), all with Rory Harris. He also wrote The Tin House (1989), published in the Bookshelf reading series.
