BiographyHistory

Osgood, McIlvaine and Company was established in 1891 in London as a subsidiary of the American firm Harper and Brothers. It was founded by James Ripley Osgood, an American publisher who had gone bankrupt, and young Harper employee Charles W. McIlvaine, in response to the passage of US legislation protecting the work of British writers. Osgood sought to publish English books for the transatlantic book trade. Osgood died in 1892 and the firm ceased publishing in 1897.
