George Hutchinson left school at fifteen and worked as a clerk and sales representative. He attended evening college in 1962, matriculated in 1963 and gained a scholarship to Sydney University. Completing an Arts degree in 1966, and a Diploma in Education in 1967, he then worked as a school teacher. After seven years of full time work he decided to teach on a part-time basis so as to devote more time to his writing.
