William and Edward Tinsley established a bookselling partnership in London in 1858. They sold job lots of used books from subscription libaries, and by the mid 1860s had developed as a leading publishers of books for the flourishing library market. The firm specialised in popular three-volume novels in quality bindings. Tinsley Brothers declined following Edward's death in 1866 and with the advent a number of competitors in the library market, and ceased publishing in 1892.

A publisher by the name of Samuel Tinsley published similar material in London between 1872 and 1881, but this was a separate firm.
