BiographyHistory

Elliot Stock commenced business as a bookseller on Paternoster Row in London in 1859. The firm published non-sectarian religious material, and a well-known series of facsimile reprints of classics and religious works. A serious literary publisher, it published the London Quarterly Review from 1865.

Stock was a bibliophile and a distinguished bibliographer, who founded a number of bibliographical serials, and whose work is still in use. In 1908 he sold his business to Robert Scott, who retained the imprint until 1939.
