Richard McGregor has worked for Australian newspapers and has been the China and the Washington bureau chief of the Financial Times. In 2011, he won the Asia Society's Bernard Schwartz Book Award for The Party: The Secret World of China's Communist Rulers. In 2018, his Asia's Reckoning won the Prime Minister's Literary Awards (Non-fiction).
McGregor is the older brother of novelist and short story writer Fiona McGregor and cousin of singer-songwriter Paul Kelly.
