BiographyHistory

The Saturday Centre was established by the Saturday Club, a poetry discussion group founded in Sydney in the early 1970s. On the suggestion of Kenneth Slessor, who was an early member, it began publishing a poetry magazine, The Saturday Club Book of Poetry in 1972; it later published SCOPP: Saturday Centre for Prose and Poetry. It also published the Saturday Centre Poets Series, largely featuring the work of young Australian poets, and a poetry series for children, Saturday Centre Books for Kids.

The director of the press was Kenneth Laird, and executive editor Patricia Laird, who typeset and printed most works. Joanne Burns, Rae Desmond Jones, Barbara Fordham and Lyndon Walker gave editorial assistance.
