BiographyHistory

Daughter of George Styles and his wife Sarah (Flatman), probably the 8th child, Emma Styles came to South Australia in 1849 on the Glen Huntley at the age of five. By 1851 George was a storekeeper and baker in Unley.

When St Augustine's Anglican Church, Unley, was first built it had sackcloth to cover the windows, and Emma wrote a book of poetry to raise money for stained glass for the windows. It sold for 2/6. In 1871 she was appointed the first librarian of the first public library in the Sunday School building, in Unley.

Emma, her parents and her sister Esther travelled to England in 1875-6, and this was the inspiration for another volume of poems. Emma and Esther remained unmarried and lived with their parents at 'Amersham Villa', Unley, where the Metro shopping centre now stands. Their mother died in 1882 and their father in 1890.

Notes

  • An 'ES' of Norwood wrote a poem, 'Thoughts' for Adelaide Miscellany vol 1 no 3 1868 (p 23). 'S' of Norwood also wrote the 2nd prize original tale for vol 1 no 10 1868. However, Emma's family (and presumably Emma) apparently lived in Unley at this time.
