Perhaps best known in his role as Solicitor General for New South Wales (NSW), M. G. Sexton has reviewed books for various Australian journals, including the Sydney Morning Herald. From 1987 to 1991 he was a member of the NSW Library Council and from 1996 to 1998 he was Chairman of the State Rail Authority and a member of the NSW Public Transport Authority. His books on Australian history and politics include Illusions of Power: The Fate of a Reform Government (1979), The Great Crash: The Short Life and Sudden Death of the Whitlam Government (1979) and War for the Asking: Australia's Vietnam Secrets (1981). His books on legal matters include The Regulation of Foreign Investment in Australia (1981), The Legal Mystique: The Role of Lawyers in Australian Society (1982) and Uncertain Justice: Inside Australia's Legal System (2000). His writings on Australian defamation law are highly regarded in the legal profession.
