John Foster taught Children's Literature at the University of South Australia (and its predecessors) for over two decades and was also the director of the Centre for Children's Literature at the same institution. Prior to his work at the university Foster was a school librarian.
Foster holds two Masters degrees as well as a PhD (from the University of Adelaide) which focussed on subliteratures for children.
