Rob Johnson studied at the University of Manchester and worked as a teacher before coming to Australia in 1954. He spent several years in New South Wales before settling in South Australia where he taught English at the University of Adelaide. His first poetry collection Caught on the Hop was published in 1984. His poetry ranges through social and political comment, personal relationships, art and architecture. Johnson has also published critical works (Walter Pater : A Study of His Critical Outlook and Achievement, 1961; and Aestheticism, 1969).
His poetry has been published widely in journals, newspapers and anthologies and has been broadcast on radio.
